At 13 km facing South East from Taranto there is a little promontory named “Saturo Tower”, stretching out the Ionic Tarantine Gulf. We are in presence of one of the most important archaeological area of the Mediterranean Sea, but not enough known in the world.
\nAt the end of VIII century BC landed in its shore the Spartan colonial expedition led by the Spartan Phalantos, the founder of Greek Laconian colony named Taranto. Phalantos obeyed orders of Delphi\u2019s Oracle that had indicated him the fertile land of Satyrion in the western coast of Apulia. Here Phalantos settled his Laconic-Spartan colony, the first Doric city in Tarantine Gulf.
\nArchaeological excavations have discovered on the hill and in the northern chora the Greek Acropolis, two shrines, a Necropolis, a Roman Villa and hundred and hundred of finds from votive deposits and from tombs: pots, terracotta-figures, pieces of marble sculptures, coins, jewels. All these archaeological finds are today mostly covered or destroyed or hidden in the stores of the National Museum of Taranto; therefore, they don\u2019t increase Saturo in value as it deserves. In fact the present existence of an archaeological park over the bay isn\u2019t enough against vandalism, contraband excavations, while the shrine of the Nympha Satyria, one of the most important ancient sanctuaries of the Mediterranean sea, is not yet included within the park and more and more it is hidden by black burry bushes and oblivion.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"
