PARALLEL ACTIVITIES OF THE FESTIVAL

AGON Travels… and Takes You with It

The initiative “AGON Travels… and Takes You with It” is one of the Festival’s main outreach actions. It includes touring screenings of selected Festival films outside Athens, organized in collaboration with local institutions, cultural centers, and museums during the years when the Festival itself does not take place, as it is a biennale held every two years.

The initiative draws on the extensive and diverse Archive of the Festival “AGON,” established in 1996 and containing rare material from around the world, positioning Greece as a reference point in the field of archaeological and cultural documentary filmmaking.

The Festival’s films are human-centered, addressing global audiences and serving as a starting point for dialogue and meaningful interaction. Themes such as migration, cultural exchange, the formation of new identities, memory, conflict, and cultural resilience connect past and present, making the initiative timely and internationally relevant—a meeting point for cultures in conversation.

The program is complemented by multidisciplinary events, including:

  • painting exhibitions and visual art interventions,
  • concerts featuring local music ensembles,
  • thematic discussions with audiences and institutional partners.

From its very foundation, the Festival has traveled to municipalities of Athens, to Greek and foreign archaeological schools, and to locations such as Chios, Ithaca, Kavala, Kefalonia, Syros, and more recently Thessaloniki, Skyros, and Soufli—offering equal access to wider audiences.

For the summer of 2026, the initiative is scheduled to expand further through collaborations in Cyprus and the United States, strengthening the international promotion of Greece and its cultural identity.
