The subject of this documentary is the eventful history of Samos which, in ancient times, gained supremacy of the seas and became the “first among all cities” according to Herodotus’ history. Samos of the great and wonderful works: the gigantic temple of Hera, the Heraion, the unique Aqueduct of Eupalinos with its “double orifice tunnel”, which belongs to the greatest technical works of antiquity, the city’s magnificent port installations with the great pier, “the land in the sea”, and the wonderfully preserved fortification walls. Samos, with its worthy sons who influenced the evolution of history and thought, the mathematician and philosopher Pythagoras, the astronomer Aristarchos, with his revolutionary theories on the earth’s movement around the sun, which Galileo and Copernicus were to reassert centuries later. Samos with its great architects and artists, Roiko and Theodore, Geneleos and the others, whose names have been lost, but whose works are the pride of the island’s and the world’s museums.
