On August 24th AD 79 Vesuvius came to life after lying dormant for hundreds of years. Sixteen years earlier the inhabitants of Herculaneum, 6 km. away on its lower slopes, had been badly shaken by a violent earthquake. But nothing have ever prepared them for the fury of Vesuvius that day. New interdisciplinary research from a team uniting archaeologists, vulcanologists and anthropologists is set to unravel the mystery surrounding that horrific eruption and to reconstruct in minute detail the exact chain of events.
