The film tells the story of the discovery of a pioneering Byzantine painter from 15th c. Crete. Initially believed to have lived during the 17th c., the painter Angelos was considered a 2nd-rate painter who copied earlier artists. When a last will and testament was identified as his, scholars realised that Angelos actually lived two hundred years earlier and was a major influence on artists like El Greco.
A Byzantine detective story, “Hand of Angelos” was made to accompany the homonymous exhibition at the Benaki Museum in 2011.
