The film starts in Eastern Crete, at the site of Palekastro, with MacGillivray’s discovery of a Minoan gold and ivory statuette of a man. Museums in Europe and the USA possess illegally exported Minoan ivory statuettes, but the “Palekastro Kouros” was the first to be found in an official excavation. The “Kouros” looks suspiciously different to the other ivories.
In his effort to understand this unique masterpiece, MacGillivray comes up against Evan’s “ghost”. The pioneering archaeologist’s overwhelming vision of the Minoans cannot provide a satisfactory explanation of the Palekastro Kouros, so MacGillivray is forced to investigate how much of Evan’s Minoan “History” is based on solid facts…
Through dramatic reconstructions shot in the archaeological site of Knossos, documentary footage and high quality computer animation, the film brings to life the Golden Age of great discoveries and reminds us why History is important to us today.
